What we collect, why, how long we keep it, and who can see it.

What we collect

From account holders and guardians: name, email, password (stored hashed), time zone, mailing address if you give it, payment details (held by our payment processor, not by us), and the permissions you set.

From child profiles: first name, age, grade, time zone, the username and password a parent set, and what happens in class: attendance, assignments, grades where a class is graded, messages and board posts, and recordings as described in the Recording & Media Policy.

From instructors: the application, identity-verification and background-check results (held by our screening provider), tax forms, payout details (held by our payment processor), and classes taught.

From gift card recipients: the email address the purchaser gives us, and whether and when the card was redeemed. We use it only to deliver the gift card, which carries the purchaser’s name and the amount, and to show the purchaser that it was redeemed. We do not add that address to any list or contact it for any other reason. A recipient who never opens an account can ask us to delete it by writing to us.

From everyone: the technical record of using the site, such as IP address, browser, pages visited, and the time of each sign-in.

Why we collect it

To run classes and keep the records families are owed. To keep children safe, including by verifying adults, recording classes, and reviewing reports. To take payment, deliver gift cards, and pay instructors. To tell you about changes that affect you. To improve the platform using aggregate, de-identified usage.

We do not sell personal information. We do not show advertising. We do not build profiles of children for any purpose other than their own learning record.

How long we keep it

Academic records are kept while the account is open and for seven years after the student’s last class, so that transcripts can be generated later; you may ask us to delete them sooner. Recordings follow the Recording & Media Policy. Messages are kept while the account is open. Technical logs are kept for one year. Background-check results are kept for as long as the instructor teaches and three years after. Gift card records, including the recipient’s email, are kept as part of the purchaser’s receipt for as long as financial records must be kept.

Who can see it

A child’s guardians, with the permissions the account holder has set. The instructors of the classes the child is in, for that class only. Lyceum staff with a need to know, under access controls that are logged. Service providers who host, email, process payments, screen instructors, or screen content for us, under contracts that limit what they may do with it. Authorities where the law requires, and anyone where a child’s safety requires it.

Content screening in particular: the text of messages, board posts and replies, reviews, assignment notes, wishes and thank-you notes, and every picture or file another person could see, are sent at the moment they are written or uploaded to a content-safety classifier (currently Hive Moderation) that returns a verdict and keeps the content only as long as needed to produce it; it is not used to train the classifier. On Apple devices a separate check (Apple’s Sensitive Content Analysis) runs on the device itself and sends nothing anywhere. Flagged items, and the classifier’s verdict, are kept in our safety log for a person to review and for as long as safety records must be kept; items that pass leave no record beyond the message or file itself.
