Academic philosophy

A stated perspective. An honest classroom.

Courses may openly approach their subjects from a conservative perspective, but they must be intellectually serious rather than propagandistic. Students encounter arguments, primary sources, historical context, competing interpretations, and genuine criticism.

The goal is not false neutrality. The goal is academic seriousness.

  • 01

    Sympathetic examination without hagiography

A course on Rush Limbaugh can be favorable toward his contribution to American conservatism while also examining criticism of his methods, rhetoric, and legacy.

  • 02

The achievement and the man, together

A course on Thomas Jefferson teaches the Declaration and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom as the achievements they are, and does not skip the contradictions in the man who wrote them.

  • 03

    Primary sources first

A student studying constitutionalism reads the Constitution and the Federalist Papers. A student studying Adam Smith reads Smith. Commentary comes after the text, never instead of it.

The classroom rules

Six things every instructor agrees to

  • Instructors distinguish claims, arguments, evidence, opinion, and historical fact, out loud and by name.
  • Primary sources come before commentary. Always.
  • Every thinker is paired with a serious critic, read in the original.
  • Students are regularly required to argue positions they do not hold.
  • Grading rewards the accuracy of an opponent’s argument as much as the strength of your own.
  • “This is where you learn what to think” never appears. “This is where you learn to examine serious ideas” does.
Why the product is shaped this way

Five ideas that reinforce each other

  • Presence

    Live attendance matters

Every class is fundamentally a live class. Recording is a backup for the week life gets in the way, never the model. Attendance records, dashboards, and rewards all preserve the difference.

  • Substance

    The intellectual tradition matters

Conservative thought, Western civilization, the American founding, and the great books are the center of the catalog, taught with primary sources and real argument.

  • Depth

    Depth matters

A year spent reading one serious book with a good teacher can be worth more than dozens of disconnected hours. The whole-book seminar is our signature format.

  • Partnership

    Parents matter

Unusually strong oversight and transparency by design. Up to six authorized guardians per child, complete visibility into every conversation, and records you actually own.

  • Belonging

    Community matters

Recurring teachers, clubs, pathways, rewards, and transcripts give a student reasons to stay in the Lyceum for years rather than for a semester.

Judge the work

Every course states its perspective on the page.

Open any class and you will find a section titled “How this course handles its perspective.” We would rather you read it before you enroll.
