The faculty

Instructors

Recruited, vetted, trained and compensated by the Lyceum. Onboarding evaluates instructional ability and subject-matter competence both. An instructor teaching Burke or Sowell must understand the material, not merely agree with it.

  • Political Philosophy & Constitutional Thought

Alan spent fourteen years teaching political theory to undergraduates before concluding that the conversation he wanted to have works better with sixteen-year-olds, who have not yet learned to perform sophistication. He has taught Tocqueville nineteen times and says he is still finding new things in the second volume.

  • Art, Western Civilization & Studio Practice

Claire paints landscapes and teaches children to actually draw. Her American Landscape studio runs on graphite, watercolor, and an unfashionable insistence that students learn to see a value structure before they pick a color.

  • Literature, Rhetoric & the Great Books

Imani taught ninth-grade English in Atlanta for nine years and has the rare gift of getting a silent room to argue. She built the Lyceum’s Douglass and Lewis seminars and insists her students read aloud, badly at first, then well.

  • American History & Civics

James has taught American history to public-school juniors, homeschool co-ops, and adult evening classes, and says the homeschoolers ask the hardest questions. He runs the Lyceum’s Federalist and Anti-Federalist seminar.

  • Economics, Logic & Entrepreneurship

Thomas came to teaching from small-business lending, where he watched a lot of good ideas fail for reasons no one had explained to their founders. He teaches price theory with a whiteboard and a genuine relish for the objections.

Vetting

What it takes to teach here

Every instructor clears the same six gates before a student ever sees them.

  • 01

    Subject-matter competence

An instructor teaching Burke or Sowell must understand the material, its influences, its critics, and its weakest points, not merely agree with it. Vetting evaluates the scholarship, not the politics.

  • 02

    Instructional ability

A demonstration lesson is part of onboarding. We are looking for someone who can hold a room of twelve teenagers in genuine conversation for sixty minutes.

  • 03

    Child safety training

Identity verification, a background check, and training in child safety and mandatory reporting.

  • 04

    Socratic method

Internal training in discussion leadership, question design, and how to make a quiet student talk without embarrassing them.

  • 05

    Parent communication

Instructors are trained to write to parents as partners: clearly, promptly, and always on the record.

  • 06

    The Founding Principles

Every instructor is taught what the Lyceum stands for and where the line between teaching a perspective and propagandizing sits.

Teach with us

We are hiring instructors who know the material.

Competitive compensation, real institutional support, and students who have done the reading. Applications are reviewed by the academic team, not an algorithm.
