Instructor Agreement

Independent-contractor status, pay, your materials, and what each side owes the other.

Last updated October 27, 2026

What this agreement is

This agreement supplements the Terms of Service for every person who teaches on the Lyceum. Together with the Instructor Standards and the Recording & Media Policy, it is the whole of the relationship between you and Odysseus Lyceum. Where it conflicts with the Terms of Service, this agreement governs the instructor relationship.

You are an independent contractor

You teach on the Lyceum as an independent contractor, not as an employee. You are not entitled to wages, overtime, benefits, workers’ compensation, or unemployment insurance from the Lyceum, and the Lyceum does not withhold taxes from your payouts.

The Lyceum is not an insurer, agent, or employer for you. You are responsible for your own acts and omissions while teaching, for your own equipment and connection, for your own professional judgment within the standards you have agreed to, and for your own taxes. You will give us a completed Form W-9 before your first payout, and we will issue a Form 1099-NEC each January for the prior year’s earnings.

You may teach elsewhere. Nothing in this agreement is exclusive, except that you may not use the Lyceum to recruit its students or families to another platform or to private tutoring outside it.

What the Lyceum requires before you teach

Identity verification, a background check, and training in child safety and mandatory reporting, all completed before you meet a student. Every course you propose goes through academic review before it is listed. You agree to repeat any of these when we ask, and you agree to tell us within one business day if anything happens that would change the result of a background check.

How you are paid

Compensation for each class is stated in the course listing before you agree to teach it. Payouts follow the schedule published in your Earnings pages and are made to the account you designate. You can see every amount owed, paid, and pending, and the enrollment it comes from, at any time.

If a class is cancelled by the Lyceum, you are paid for meetings already taught. If you cancel a class or a meeting, the Refund Policy for families applies and you are not paid for meetings not taught.

Your materials

You keep ownership of the materials you create. You grant the Lyceum a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, reproduce, display, and distribute those materials and the recordings of your classes to enrolled families and for safety review, for as long as the Recording & Media Policy allows, and to use short excerpts to describe your class in the catalog.

You warrant that your materials are yours to license, that they do not infringe anyone else’s rights, and that any third-party text or images you use are properly licensed or fairly used.

Conduct

You agree to the Instructor Standards in full. In particular: you will never communicate privately with a minor outside the platform; you will distinguish claims, arguments, evidence, opinion, and historical fact in your teaching and present the serious critics of your subject honestly; and you will not campaign, electioneer, fundraise for a campaign, or organize politically in any Lyceum class, club, board, or message.

Your responsibility to the Lyceum

You agree to defend and indemnify the Lyceum and its directors, officers, employees, volunteers, and agents against claims, losses, and reasonable attorneys’ fees arising from your breach of this agreement or the Instructor Standards, your negligence or misconduct toward a student or family, or your infringement of another person’s rights. This does not apply to the extent a claim arises from the Lyceum’s own negligence or misconduct.

The Lyceum’s liability to you is limited as described in the Terms of Service, except that nothing limits our obligation to pay you for classes you have taught.

Ending the relationship

You may stop teaching at any time by finishing the classes you have committed to or, if you cannot, by telling us at once so families can be told and refunded. We may remove you immediately for any ground listed in the Instructor Standards, and otherwise on thirty days’ notice. Amounts owed for classes taught are paid on the normal schedule regardless of how the relationship ends.

Sections of this agreement that by their nature should survive, including the license for recordings already made, indemnity, and the contractor status of work already done, survive.

Odysseus Lyceum does not discriminate on the basis of age, sex, race, national origin, disability, religion, or any other characteristic protected by law.
