Learning is better when you show up
Our courses are built around live conversation, not passive video. Miss a meeting when life gets in the way, and you can catch up with the recording. But at Odysseus, being there matters.
Four reasons, plainly
- 01
A recording cannot ask you a question
The single most valuable thing that happens in a seminar is a teacher noticing that a student has misunderstood something and stopping to fix it. That cannot happen to a video.
- 02
Being expected somewhere is a form of respect
A twelve-student seminar where everyone is expected to speak produces preparation that no self-paced course has ever produced. The obligation is the pedagogy.
- 03
You cannot argue with a playback
Learning to state a position, hear an objection, and revise in real time is a skill. It is only trainable in a room with other people in it.
- 04
Classmates are the point, not the packaging
Homeschool families in particular tell us the recurring cohort, the same eleven faces every Tuesday for a year, is what they were actually missing.
Two marks, never blurred
The platform always preserves the distinction between attending live and watching a recording: in attendance records, in parent dashboards, and in rewards.
Attended live
- Full attendance credit
- 100 Lyceum Points
- Counts toward the live streak
- Progress toward a tuition reward
Recording viewed
- Completion credit
- 20 Lyceum Points
- Breaks the live streak
- Shown as a recording on the record
The point is not to punish a family for a hard week. The point is that a transcript which says a student was present ninety-two percent of the time should mean it.
Rewards follow attendance
Values are adjustable; the principle is not. Presence has value, and the economy is built to say so.
Attended live
100 points
Full attendance credit and a live mark on the record. The family balance gets 100 matching points too.
Watched the recording
20 points
Completion credit so nobody falls behind, recorded clearly as a recording, never as attendance.
Five live in a row
Streak reward
Bonus points for the student and, matched, for the family. The streak shows on both the student wallet and the parent dashboard.
A seminar finished live
400 points
Completing a seminar primarily live earns a badge and 400 points, matched in the family balance, where 2,400 points cover a free one-time class.
Be there
Pick a class and show up for it.
Sections are small on purpose. Twelve students in a seminar, eighteen in a lecture-and-discussion course, and every one of them expected to speak.
