Vetting
Before meeting a student, every instructor completes identity verification, a background check, and training in child safety and mandatory reporting. Academic review of each proposed course weighs most heavily how the instructor would handle the serious critics of their subject: an instructor teaching Burke or Sowell must understand the material, its influences, its critics, and its weakest points, not merely agree with it.
Conduct toward students
Never communicate privately with a minor outside the platform. Every message, board post, and attachment involving a student is visible to their guardians, and that is the only channel.
Treat students as people learning to think, not as an audience. Correct error plainly and kindly. Never ridicule a student, in class or in a recording.
Ask students for nothing beyond what the class requires. Never ask for or accept a student’s social-media handle, phone number, or home address.
Teaching
Distinguish claims, arguments, evidence, opinion, and historical fact, and say which is which. Present the strongest version of positions you disagree with. Teach the course that was reviewed; tell us before changing the reading or the perspective.
Start and end on time. Attendance records, Lyceum Points, and family schedules depend on it.
What is prohibited
Candidate campaigning, electioneering, campaign fundraising, and political organizing. Soliciting students or families for anything outside the Lyceum. Recording or distributing class recordings yourself. Any conduct that would violate the Community Standards.
Grounds for removal
Immediate removal: any private contact with a minor, any conduct endangering a child, any dishonesty in the application or background check, any campaigning or political organizing, any breach of the Recording & Media Policy.
Removal after review: repeated lateness or no-shows, teaching materially different content from what was reviewed, sustained complaints from families that review finds substantiated, or any other breach of these standards.
Odysseus Lyceum does not discriminate on the basis of age, sex, race, national origin, disability, religion, or any other characteristic protected by law.
