About

Imani taught ninth-grade English in Atlanta for nine years and has the rare gift of getting a silent room to argue. She built the Lyceum’s Douglass and Lewis seminars and insists her students read aloud, badly at first, then well.

Teaching philosophy

“A book is a person talking to you across time, and the least you can do is listen carefully enough to disagree accurately. My classroom rule is simple: quote the text or change the subject.”
