About

Alan spent fourteen years teaching political theory to undergraduates before concluding that the conversation he wanted to have works better with sixteen-year-olds, who have not yet learned to perform sophistication. He has taught Tocqueville nineteen times and says he is still finding new things in the second volume.

Teaching philosophy

“I do not tell students what to conclude. I make them read the text, state the argument in their own words, and then face the strongest objection to it. A student who can do that has been educated. A student who has memorized my opinions has not.”
