Heroes of Ancient Greece

Myths told properly · Ages 6–9

Odysseus, Theseus, Perseus, Atalanta. The stories that the whole of Western literature keeps quoting, told to children who are meeting them for the first time.

Overview

A child who knows these stories will recognize them for the rest of their life: in books, in paintings, in the names of things. That is the entire point of teaching them early.

Told, not read. Dr. Hale narrates; the children map the journey, name the heroes, and answer questions about what a hero actually is.

Come and go as it suits you

Every meeting of this class stands on its own. Nothing in week six assumes week five, so a student can join in the middle, take the four weeks that fit around a busy month, and stop when they want to. There is no catching up to do, because there is nothing to be behind on.

That is also why there is no grade here and no such thing as an incomplete. The record keeps what actually happened: the meetings attended live and the recordings watched. A student who came to three meetings has a record of three meetings, not a failure.

What students will be able to do

  • Recount four hero journeys from memory
  • Locate Greece, Troy, and Ithaca on a map
  • Describe what the Greeks admired in a person
  • Notice a myth when it turns up elsewhere

How this course handles its perspective

Told as the Greeks told them, with their moral world intact rather than modernized. Frightening episodes are handled plainly and without gore.
