Aesop's Fables

The first stories that teach · Ages 5–7

Two fables a week, read aloud and then talked about. The oldest way of teaching a child what a person ought to do, and still the best.

Imani Bell

Instructor

Ms. Imani Bell

Literature, Rhetoric & the Great Books

New this term. Reviews from students and parents appear here once families have taken it.

Overview

Thirty minutes is exactly as long as a five-year-old can hold a conversation, so that is how long the class is. Ms. Bell reads the fable aloud, the children retell it in their own words, and then they argue, gently, about whether the fox was right.

No reading is required at home. A child who cannot yet read can take this class in full.

Come and go as it suits you

Every meeting of this class stands on its own. Nothing in week six assumes week five, so a student can join in the middle, take the four weeks that fit around a busy month, and stop when they want to. There is no catching up to do, because there is nothing to be behind on.

That is also why there is no grade here and no such thing as an incomplete. The record keeps what actually happened: the meetings attended live and the recordings watched. A student who came to three meetings has a record of three meetings, not a failure.

What students will be able to do

  • Retell a story in the right order
  • Name what a character wanted and what it cost
  • Say the moral in your own words
  • Disagree with a classmate kindly

How this course handles its perspective

The classical moral reading. Fables are treated as arguments about character, not as decoration.
