Portraits of a Republic

Historical painting & presidential portraiture

Three long Saturday sessions on how a nation paints itself (Trumbull, Stuart, Peale) and then students draw a portrait of their own.

Overview

A short intensive in the studio. Students look hard at three famous American paintings, learn what compositional decisions were being made, and produce one graphite portrait from a reference of their choosing.

Come and go as it suits you

Every meeting of this class stands on its own. Nothing in week six assumes week five, so a student can join in the middle, take the four weeks that fit around a busy month, and stop when they want to. There is no catching up to do, because there is nothing to be behind on.

That is also why there is no grade here and no such thing as an incomplete. The record keeps what actually happened: the meetings attended live and the recordings watched. A student who came to three meetings has a record of three meetings, not a failure.

What students will be able to do

  • Analyze the composition of a historical painting

How this course handles its perspective

The paintings are treated as art first and as national iconography second. Restrained, not flag-waving.

      Drawing from Nature

Look first, then draw · Ages 6–9

A leaf, a shell, a feather, a bird. Mrs. Finch teaches young children to actually look at a thing before they draw it, the one habit that makes every later drawing better.
