Overview

A student about to take a first job needs this material now, not spread across a semester. Meeting twice a week finishes it in five weeks, which is short enough to run in the weeks before a summer job or a senior year.

It builds in order: you cannot talk usefully about credit before compounding, or about taxes before a paycheck. So this one runs start to finish and is graded, unlike most of our catalog.

Students leave with an actual budget for their own actual money, a filled-out sample tax form, and the arithmetic on a car loan they can do in their head.

This one runs in order

This one meets twice a week, always at the same hour. That is a real claim on your week, and it is deliberate: this material is learned faster in short frequent contact than in one long meeting, and the gap between meetings is short enough that nothing has to be re-established at the start of each one.

This course accumulates. The class reads the same pages at the same pace and each meeting picks up the argument where the last one left it, so joining halfway means joining an argument already in progress.

Because there is a whole body of work at the end of it, this one is graded (pass/fail) and can be carried to a transcript. Enroll before the second meeting.

What students will be able to do

  • Build and keep a real budget from real numbers
  • Explain compounding well enough to compute it, in both directions
  • Read a pay stub and a credit card statement line by line
  • Complete a simple tax return
  • Say what insurance is actually for

Syllabus

  1. Week 1

    The paycheck

Two meetings: gross, net, withholding, and where the rest of it went.

  2. Week 2

    The budget

Two meetings: a real budget built from the student’s own figures.

  3. Week 3

    Compounding

Two meetings: interest working for you and against you, computed both ways.

  4. Week 4

    Credit and debt

Two meetings: cards, scores, car loans, and the cost of the minimum payment.

  5. Week 5

    Taxes and insurance

Two meetings: a sample return completed, and what risk is worth paying to avoid.

How this course handles its perspective

Taught from the conviction that a young adult who understands compounding and stays out of consumer debt starts free. Markets and credit are presented with both their uses and their traps.
